Hillsdale Town Court is the first-level trial court in the New York State Court System. The Court has jurisdiction over vehicle and traffic matters, criminal matters, small claims cases (up to $3000), and landlord-tenant cases. It has the authority to arraign persons on all charges but is generally limited to the adjudication of non-felony charges.
The Town justices are also empowered to officiate at weddings of all who possess a valid marriage license in the State of New York. The voters of Hillsdale elect the Town Justices to four-year terms.

The Town of Hillsdale Court does allow plea by mail for SIMPLE vehicle and traffic cases ONLY (not for criminal cases). You must go to the Columbia County District Attorney website and follow the steps to complete the plea by mail process. You must contact the court immediately if you choose to initiate this process. You must follow up with the court on your normally scheduled appearance dates every month to ensure your case is in good standing until the process is completed. This process is not monitored or initiated by the court and solely falls on the defendant to make sure all steps are completed accurately and timely.
Adjournment requests must be made at least a week prior to your scheduled court date. You can come in person or call during business hours to make the request. You may also request the adjournment in writing by fax or mail, but the court must receive it a week prior to your date and you must follow up with the court to get a response. Each of the court’s responses to a request is on a case by case basis.
Payments can be taken in the form of a personal check, money order, or bank check by mail.
In-person payments can be taken during office hours by way of check, cash (exact amount only), and Visa or Master Card as long as the cardholder is present to sign. An ID may be required. NOTE: there is a 2.99% transaction fee to process all credit cards.
